Mrinalini Mukherjee
Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949-2015) was an Indian sculptor renowned for her innovative use of unconventional materials and her unique sculptural language that blended traditional Indian crafts with modernist sensibilities. Born in Mumbai, Mukherjee grew up in a family of artists and received her early education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. She later studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design in the United Kingdom. Mukherjee's career spanned over four decades, during which she created a diverse body of work that included large-scale, free-standing sculptures, hanging installations, and intricate woven forms. Her early works were primarily made using natural fibers such as hemp, sisal, and jute, which she knotted, braided, and wove into complex, organic shapes that evoked the lushness and sensuality of nature. These sculptures often took on anthropomorphic or biomorphic forms, blurring the boundaries between the human, the vegetal, and the abstract. In the later part of her career, Mukherjee experimented with ceramic and bronze, creating monumental sculptures that were more geometric and architectural in nature. Throughout her oeuvre, Mukherjee's works were characterized by a deep engagement with materiality, a keen understanding of form and space, and a subtle interplay of light and shadow. Her sculptures have been exhibited widely in India and internationally, and are held in major collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. Mukherjee's contributions to Indian art have been widely recognized, and she remains a pivotal figure in the history of modern and contemporary sculpture in India.
