This specialized bathtub, which earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category, represents a significant advancement in accessible bathroom design. The system features a unique mobile chair mechanism that enables seamless transfer from bed or wheelchair directly into the bathing area, minimizing the physical strain on both the user and caregiving staff. Constructed primarily from acrylic material, chosen for its superior thermal insulation and corrosion-resistant properties, the bathtub measures 760mm in width, 1200mm in depth, and 1000mm in height. The design incorporates a sophisticated sliding orbit system that allows the chair to move backward once locked into position, creating additional bathing space while maintaining safety and stability. This thoughtful solution emerged from extensive field research conducted across 30 families with disabled elderly members, addressing the critical issues of dignity, safety, and practical functionality in elderly care. The design particularly excels in its approach to reducing the physical and emotional challenges associated with patient transfer, which has been identified as a significant pain point in elderly care. Developed in Shanghai during 2017, this bathtub design represents a response to the growing challenges of aging populations worldwide, offering a practical solution that enhances both user independence and caregiver efficiency.
