Mook Salon

Mook Salon is an innovative architectural interior design project located in Nakazakicho, Osaka, Japan, that revolutionizes the traditional concept of a hair salon through its distinctive use of uneven oak panels and thoughtful manipulation of natural light. The design, completed in 2015, transforms a ground-floor space of 85 square meters into an immersive environment that seamlessly integrates with its urban surroundings. The salon's most striking feature is its cave-like interior composition, created through a sophisticated arrangement of untimbered oak pieces captured mid-sawing process, which creates a unique interplay between light and shadow. This architectural intervention effectively addresses the common challenge of limited natural light in urban ground-floor spaces through strategically designed cavities that channel daylight from the street to the salon's interior. The uneven surfaces of the oak panels serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, absorbing and diffusing light while symbolically representing the diversity of the salon's clientele and the surrounding community. The design's relationship with its context is particularly noteworthy, as it responds to Nakazakicho's characteristic narrow, curved alleyways and traditional urban fabric. The glass facade acts as a dynamic interface between the interior and exterior, incorporating the movement of people and urban life into the design itself. This project, which garnered a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, exemplifies excellence in spatial design through its innovative approach to materials, lighting, and urban integration, while maintaining functionality with its five-mirror setup and efficient salon operations.
