Moodo Emotions App
Moodo Emotions App is an innovative educational interface designed specifically for tablet devices, primarily iPad and Android platforms, that serves as a comprehensive tool for developing emotional intelligence in young children, particularly those aged five to eight years old. Developed by designers Aishwarya Suresh and Jaylon Tellis through their educational technology brand Tinker Works, this application addresses a critical gap in early childhood emotional development resources by reimagining the traditional emotion wheel concept into an intuitive, child-friendly digital experience that enables preschool-aged children to recognize, understand, and articulate their emotional states in healthy and constructive ways. The application employs a distinctive slider-based interface mechanism that allows children to navigate through both fundamental emotions and their more nuanced variations, moving beyond the binary emotional categorizations that often limit young children's emotional vocabulary and understanding. Central to the user experience is an anthropomorphized robot character that serves as an empathetic guide, mirroring the child's selected emotions and facilitating interactive dialogues that help contextualize feelings within real-world situations. The technical architecture integrates an emotion database with conversational artificial intelligence engines, including GPT models, enabling dynamic, context-aware interactions that adapt to individual user inputs and provide personalized coping strategies tailored to each child's emotional state. The interface design incorporates responsive visual elements, including background color schemes that shift to reflect the emotional tone being explored, creating an immersive environment that reinforces emotional recognition through multi-sensory engagement. The development process, which took place between December 2024 and January 2025 across Houston and Los Angeles, employed rigorous design thinking methodologies, including literature reviews on pediatric emotional development informed by research from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which demonstrates the correlation between emotional intelligence and self-confidence in developing individuals. Usability studies conducted with the target demographic presented unique methodological challenges, as the participants were still developing their own expressive capabilities, requiring the design team to develop specialized research techniques for extracting meaningful insights from young users who are just beginning to articulate their internal experiences. The application features a weekly recap functionality that enables children to track their emotional growth over time, fostering metacognitive awareness and reflection on their developing emotional intelligence, thereby transforming what could be a purely reactive tool into a longitudinal developmental resource. The design successfully translates complex psychological concepts traditionally represented in academic emotion wheel diagrams into an accessible, engaging format that respects children's cognitive capabilities while challenging them to expand their emotional literacy. Wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes were developed using Figma, allowing for iterative refinement based on user testing feedback, ensuring that the final interface balanced educational effectiveness with age-appropriate engagement strategies. The project represents a significant contribution to the intersection of user experience design, educational technology, and developmental psychology, demonstrating how thoughtful interface design can make abstract concepts tangible and actionable for young learners. Moodo Emotions App received recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, which acknowledged the design's practical innovation in meeting professional and industrial standards while addressing real-world challenges in childhood emotional development through thoughtful, user-centered design principles that integrate industry best practices with creative problem-solving approaches.
