Metropolitan Meadow City Urban Garden
Metropolitan Meadow City Urban Garden is an innovative urban landscape intervention situated in the heart of a bustling city center, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese philosophy with contemporary sustainable design principles. This architectural masterpiece, completed in 2019, spans 2,745 square meters and represents a paradigm shift in urban landscape design by creating a conscious oasis hub that revitalizes the elevated urban network while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding mass transit infrastructure. The design philosophy draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese concept that Circle masters the Heaven, Square masters the Ground, manifesting as a tranquil landscape oasis amid dense urban surroundings. The garden's distinctive features include a central cone structure that facilitates natural light diffusion and cross-ventilation, complemented by sustainable elements such as fair-face concrete construction, certified wood materials, and self-powered bollard lighting with photovoltaic cells. The project's ecological commitment is evident in its extensive greenery, incorporating 30 trees, 3,300 shrubs, 8,700 groundcovers, and 40 square meters of grassed area, effectively mitigating the urban heat island effect while promoting biodiversity through native and flowering species. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in creating a multi-functional community space that encourages various activities from reading and resting to social gatherings and cultural exchanges. The garden's sophisticated integration of sustainable materials, including Chinese Traditional Blue Bricks and Glass-fibre Reinforced Plastic sourced within 800 kilometers of the site, alongside its preservation of 13 existing trees, showcases a remarkable commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural preservation in contemporary urban design.
