Mercury-vapour Lamps

Mercury-vapour lamps are a type of gas-discharge lamp that produce light by passing an electric current through ionized mercury vapour. These lamps are commonly used for outdoor lighting, such as streetlights, parking lots, and sports fields, due to their high efficiency and long lifespan. The light produced by mercury-vapour lamps is blue-green in colour, with a characteristic bluish-white glow. The construction of a mercury-vapour lamp consists of a glass bulb filled with a small amount of mercury and an inert gas, such as argon or neon, at low pressure. When an electric current is passed through the gas, it ionizes the mercury vapour, causing it to emit ultraviolet radiation. This radiation is then absorbed by a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb, which converts it into visible light. Mercury-vapour lamps have several advantages over other types of lighting, including their high efficiency, long lifespan, and low cost. However, they also have several disadvantages, including their poor colour rendering, which can make it difficult to distinguish between colours, and their slow warm-up time, which can take several minutes. In recent years, mercury-vapour lamps have been largely replaced by more efficient and environmentally-friendly lighting technologies, such as LED and induction lighting. However, they are still used in some applications where their unique properties are desirable, such as in high-intensity discharge lamps for industrial and commercial lighting.
