Mercer Design Shanghai Office is an award-winning contemporary workspace design that exemplifies the harmonious integration of nature and modern aesthetics, completed in Shanghai, China in January 2020. The 400-square-meter office space, designed by Hongbo Zou, demonstrates a sophisticated approach to contemporary naturalism through its thoughtful incorporation of natural materials and innovative use of light. The entrance features a distinctive bronze steel plate door that leads to a mysterious wooden partition-enclosed hall, where natural light creates dynamic shadow patterns in what is referred to as the light box. The interior design employs a carefully curated selection of materials including wood, elegant marble, Hanjiang snowflake marble, and bronze metal elements to create a serene and functional environment. The space's unique architectural elements include movable wooden grilles that serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, allowing for flexible space configuration while facilitating the optimal distribution of natural light throughout the interior. The design philosophy emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between urban architecture and natural elements, creating a comfortable office environment that awakens occupants' connection to nature. This exceptional project, which garnered a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2021, showcases innovative space utilization and demonstrates excellence in combining functionality with aesthetic refinement, particularly through its sophisticated treatment of natural materials and thoughtful consideration of light dynamics.
