Mercatto Advertising Illustrations

Mercatto Advertising Illustrations

Mercatto Advertising Illustrations is a sophisticated series of line art illustrations created for Italian restaurant branding and advertising, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of classical European aesthetics with contemporary design sensibilities. The project, completed in June 2013 by illustrator Anson Liaw, masterfully captures the essence of Italian lifestyle and culinary culture through carefully crafted black ink drawings on Strathmore mixed-media paper. These illustrations, each measuring 11 by 14 inches, feature a distinctive male character who serves as a narrative guide, embodying the quintessential Italian lifestyle while engaging in various activities that resonate with urban professionals. The artistic approach draws inspiration from diverse sources, including the linear artistry of Paul Klee, Jean-Michel Basquiat's expressive style, 1960s Mod fashion, and Vespa scooter culture, creating a unique visual language that balances whimsy with sophistication. The illustrations employ a minimalist yet elegant line art technique that effectively communicates the brand's identity while maintaining artistic integrity and visual appeal. This work, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining cultural storytelling with commercial objectives. The project's success lies in its ability to create a cohesive visual narrative that appeals to urban professionals while authentically representing Italian cultural elements, making it a significant contribution to contemporary commercial illustration and restaurant branding.
