Meeting Axis Deers Pocket Park

Meeting Axis Deers Pocket Park is an innovative landscape design project that transforms an urban space in Fengyuan District, Taichung City, Taiwan, into a sustainable and ecologically conscious pocket park spanning 1,980 square meters. The design, created by Yu-Jung Tseng, draws inspiration from the historical landscape of Haluton (now Fengyuan), where Axis deer once roamed freely across vast meadows and forests. This award-winning project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, seamlessly integrates four distinct garden zones: the Herb Garden, Moss Fern Garden, Cherry Blossom Garden, and Prairie Garden, each serving unique functional and aesthetic purposes. The park demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness through its capacity to sequester 158 tons of carbon dioxide annually and maintain a 90% green coverage rate for effective PM2.5 pollution mitigation. The design incorporates sophisticated rainwater management systems capable of collecting up to 46 tons of rainwater during summer monsoons, utilizing this resource for automated irrigation throughout the year. Notable features include an edible garden component, native low-altitude Taiwanese plant species, and a specialized fern garden that showcases Taiwan's rich botanical diversity. The project addresses critical urban challenges by transforming narrow alleyways into accessible emergency routes and creating essential evacuation areas while simultaneously providing community residents with vibrant social spaces. The design's innovative approach to environmental sustainability, combined with its cultural sensitivity and practical functionality, establishes a new paradigm for urban pocket parks that effectively balance ecological preservation with community needs.
