Matchsticks Forest Poster Series is a thought-provoking visual communication project that explores the delicate relationship between human consumption and environmental preservation through innovative graphic design. Created by designer Wesam Mazhar Haddad, this series employs thousands of actual matchsticks to construct powerful visual metaphors that address deforestation and environmental degradation. The work is fundamentally based on the paradoxical concept that while one tree can produce a million matchsticks, a single matchstick holds the destructive potential to burn a million trees. The series, measuring 1000 mm x 700 mm, consists of digital prints on art matte paper with matte lamination, featuring intricate compositions where each matchstick serves as a distinct character, symbolically representing the trees from which they originated. The installation's versatility allows for various exhibition methods, including ceiling suspension, wall mounting, or outdoor display on aluminum stands near green spaces to enhance its environmental message. The creation process involved significant technical challenges, including the meticulous arrangement of fragile matchsticks and exposure to sulfur fumes, which inadvertently reinforced the project's environmental message. This work, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, demonstrates exceptional artistic merit through its innovative use of materials, profound philosophical underpinning, and powerful environmental commentary, particularly resonant in contexts where forest preservation is critical.
