Martha Keller

Martha Keller was an American artist who played a significant role in the development of abstract expressionism in the 20th century. Born in 1925 in North Carolina, Keller studied art at the University of North Carolina and later at the Art Students League in New York City. She was deeply influenced by the work of the Abstract Expressionists, particularly Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. Keller's work is characterized by bold, gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colors, which convey a sense of energy and movement. Keller's early works were primarily figurative, but she gradually moved towards abstraction in the 1950s. Her breakthrough came in 1962 with the painting Weathervane, which was exhibited at the Stable Gallery in New York City. The painting featured bold, sweeping brushstrokes of color that created a sense of movement and dynamism. It was widely acclaimed and established Keller as a major figure in the art world. Throughout her career, Keller continued to experiment with different styles and techniques. She was known for her use of color, which she used to convey emotion and mood. Her later works were more introspective and meditative, featuring softer colors and more subtle brushstrokes. Keller's work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She was a member of the American Abstract Artists group and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1976.
