Mar Mediterraneo 34 Housing Units is an exemplary architectural restoration project that transformed a deteriorating 1910 eclectic French-style house into a contemporary residential complex while preserving its historical significance. Located in the historic Tacuba neighborhood of Mexico City, this innovative renovation project, designed by architect Inca Hernandez, demonstrates a masterful balance between heritage conservation and modern functionality. The project, completed between 2017 and 2020, encompasses the meticulous restoration of the building's original artistic and artisanal elements, including carved quarry balconies, iron railings, and distinctive glass roof tiles, while introducing contemporary design elements that respect the structure's historical context. The restored building features seven uniquely designed apartments across three levels, incorporating flexible living spaces such as lofts, studios, family apartments, and penthouses. A defining characteristic of the renovation is the reconstruction of the main patio, which creates a dramatic interplay of light and shadow through intermittent openings rising in double height from a volcanic stone baseboard.
