Maidan Tent Community Space
Maidan Tent Community space is an innovative architectural solution designed to address the social and psychological needs of people living in refugee and makeshift camps, representing a significant advancement in humanitarian design. This multifunctional covered structure, conceived by designers Bonaventura Visconti and Leo Bettini, features a circular layout with a diameter of 19.50 meters and encompasses 200 square meters of covered area, thoughtfully divided into eight sectors arranged in two concentric zones. The design's central area serves as an open communal meeting place, surrounded by semi-private spaces that facilitate more intimate gatherings and activities. The structure employs a sophisticated combination of PU 20 and PES 80 polymers for its textile covering, supported by an aluminum truss system with steel joints and floor connections, ensuring both durability and adaptability to various climate conditions. The design demonstrates exceptional consideration for psychological well-being, incorporating insights from psychiatric research on migration trauma to create a space that promotes social interaction and community building. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Social Design category stands out for its innovative approach to improving refugee camp conditions, going beyond basic survival needs to address the fundamental human requirement for social interaction and community engagement. The structure's technical specifications, including its 4.20-meter height and advanced air circulation system with four pumping engines, combine functionality with comfort, while its fire-resistant materials (UNI Class 1 certified) and robust construction ensure safety and longevity. The name Maidan, derived from the Arabic word for square, reflects its fundamental purpose as a gathering place that can accommodate up to one hundred people, providing a vital platform for education, recreation, and social activities within refugee camp settings.
