Madam Wong Bar
Madam Wong Bar is an award-winning interior design project that masterfully reimagines the aesthetic of 1920s Shanghai within a contemporary context. Located in Ipoh, Malaysia, this 263-square-meter establishment represents a sophisticated fusion of historical architectural elements and modern design sensibilities. The bar's design narrative unfolds through a carefully curated journey, beginning with an understated alley entrance that leads to a transformative interior space. The design employs a luxurious material palette featuring red brick, dark leather, and metallic accents, with the color red serving as a central motif to enhance architectural features and create a warm atmosphere. Notable design elements include custom-made wall panels, traditional fan displays, and terracotta warrior sculptures that greet visitors at the entrance, establishing a strong cultural connection. The space is thoughtfully divided across two levels, offering intimate areas for relaxation and social interaction. The project successfully overcame significant challenges, including the renovation of a 30-year-old cinema site and acoustic isolation from an adjacent nightclub. The interior design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its execution, from the laser-cut metal wall panels with powder-coated finishes to the strategic implementation of contemporary materials that complement traditional motifs.
