M.Y.Lab Wood Workshop is an innovative architectural renovation project that transformed a former sofa factory warehouse in Shanghai's Changning District into a sophisticated wood crafting learning center. The project, designed by Fan Jiujiang and team, exemplifies a masterful blend of industrial heritage preservation and contemporary spatial design, encompassing a 300-square-meter space converted into a two-story commercial facility. The design philosophy centers on creating an immersive environment that honors traditional woodworking craftsmanship while incorporating modern architectural elements. The space features a distinctive sunken floor design for the main crafting area, complemented by a dramatic black metal mesh ceiling that creates an atmospheric interplay with natural light. Notable architectural elements include two strategic black metal boxes: one serving as a connecting staircase with a tilted top paralleling the main space's ceiling, and another functioning as a tearoom that seamlessly integrates with the interior and exterior spaces. The material palette demonstrates sophisticated restraint, utilizing black fluorocarbon-coated metal sheets, oak panels, and white paint, harmoniously combined with terrazzo flooring. The entrance corridor showcases an innovative display system featuring continuous cabinets and LED screens, creating an engaging visitor experience. This exceptional design, which was completed in 2017, received recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to contemporary interior architecture and its role in preserving traditional craftsmanship in modern urban contexts.
