M And W Residence

M And W Residence

M and W Residence is an innovative architectural interior design project that masterfully transforms a compact 43-square-meter space into a multi-layered living environment, completed in Taiwan in 2020 under the creative direction of Shih Chieh Kao. The design concept draws inspiration from natural mountain landscapes, incorporating undulating spatial elements and staggered levels to create a dynamic living experience within limited square footage. The residence showcases exceptional space optimization through its split-level configuration, featuring an ingenious integration of functional areas including a dressing room, studio, and reading area, while maintaining abundant natural lighting throughout. The design employs sophisticated material combinations, such as glass and mirror composite screens at the entrance, which create an interplay between virtual and real spaces while facilitating light flow. A notable feature is the rotating TV wall that blurs the boundary between the study and living room, contributing to spatial fluidity. The mezzanine bedroom, positioned like an overhanging rock formation, is flanked by transparent glass, while the indigo-blue iron staircase, wrapped in leather detailing, evokes the imagery of waterfalls and mountain trails. The project's attention to material evolution is evident in its specially treated wooden flooring that develops character over time, and the implementation of textured finishes that simulate natural erosion patterns. This exceptional design, which won the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates remarkable innovation in small-space living solutions while maintaining a strong connection to natural elements and maximizing functionality.
