Müll Furniture Series is an innovative furniture collection that exemplifies sustainable design principles through the transformation of discarded plastic bags into functional furniture pieces. Created by industrial designer Carter Zufelt, this groundbreaking series comprises two distinct pieces: a milk stool (280mm x 280mm x 460mm) and an end table (360mm x 360mm x 680mm), both crafted entirely from recycled plastic waste. The project addresses the critical environmental issue of plastic pollution, specifically targeting the estimated one trillion plastic bags consumed annually worldwide, of which less than 5% are recycled. Through extensive research and experimentation with thermoplastic properties, particularly HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), Zufelt developed a proprietary process that converts flimsy plastic bags into robust, stable furniture components that rival or exceed the strength of hardwood. The series, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, demonstrates how post-consumer waste can be transformed into aesthetically pleasing, functional objects while raising awareness about recycling and environmental sustainability. The furniture pieces feature a distinctive swirled pattern created during the manufacturing process, challenging conventional perceptions of recycled materials while maintaining structural integrity and practical utility. This innovative approach to furniture design not only addresses environmental concerns but also introduces a new paradigm in sustainable material development, proving that waste materials can be successfully repurposed into high-quality design objects.
