Louis Soutter
Louis Soutter (1871-1942) was a renowned Swiss artist, considered an outsider of the art world due to his mental illness. His works were predominantly Expressionist in style and he is best known for his frenetic brushwork and vibrant colors. Soutter was born in Morges, a small town near Lausanne, and as a young adult, attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne and the Academie Julian in Paris. His most significant artistic works include La pendu, The Rider, and La muette de Portici. His works were mostly produced during the late 19th century, as his mental health gradually deteriorated, causing him to be institutionalized from 1930 onwards.
