Lossy
Lossy is a term used in digital signal processing, particularly in the context of data compression, to describe a type of compression algorithm that reduces file size by discarding some of the original data. Unlike lossless compression, which allows for the exact reconstruction of the original data from the compressed version, lossy compression achieves higher compression ratios by removing data that is deemed less perceptually significant. This process is often used for compressing multimedia data, such as images, audio, and video, where a certain amount of information loss can be tolerated without significantly affecting the perceived quality. The goal of lossy compression is to strike a balance between file size reduction and maintaining an acceptable level of quality for the intended purpose. Lossy compression algorithms typically involve transforming the data into a domain that allows for easier identification and removal of less important information. For example, in image compression, techniques like discrete cosine transform (DCT) or wavelet transform are used to convert the image data into frequency components, and then the high-frequency components, which often correspond to less visually significant details, are quantized or discarded. The amount of data loss can be controlled by adjusting the compression parameters, such as the quantization level or the target bitrate. Higher compression ratios generally result in more data loss and potentially lower quality, while lower compression ratios preserve more of the original data but result in larger file sizes. Lossy compression is widely used in various applications, including digital photography (JPEG), audio compression (MP3, AAC), and video compression (MPEG, H.264), where the reduced file sizes enable more efficient storage, transmission, and streaming of multimedia content
