Lorenzo Da Ponte

Lorenzo Da Ponte was an Italian poet and librettist who lived during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is best known for his collaborations with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, particularly for the librettos he wrote for three of Mozart's most famous operas: Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte. Da Ponte was also a professor of Italian at Columbia University in New York City, where he spent the last years of his life. Born in Venice in 1749, Da Ponte was the son of a Jewish tanner. He was educated at a seminary and later at the University of Padua, where he studied theology and law. After being expelled from the seminary for his romantic affairs, Da Ponte moved to Venice, where he began his career as a poet and librettist. He soon gained a reputation for his wit and talent, and he was eventually appointed as the official poet of the Venetian theater. Da Ponte's collaboration with Mozart began in 1783, when he was commissioned to write the libretto for Le nozze di Figaro. The opera was a great success, and Da Ponte went on to write the librettos for Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. These three operas are considered to be among the greatest works of opera ever written, and they continue to be performed and studied today. In addition to his work as a librettist, Da Ponte was also a prolific poet and writer. He wrote several volumes of poetry, as well as essays on literature and language. He was also a professor of Italian at Columbia University in New York City, where he spent the last years of his life. Da Ponte died in New York in 1838, at the age of 89.
