Lord Carnarvon

Lord Carnarvon, also known as George Herbert, was a British aristocrat and Egyptologist who played a significant role in the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. He was a passionate collector of Egyptian antiquities and funded several expeditions to Egypt, including the one that led to the discovery of the tomb. Lord Carnarvon was known for his love of adventure and his willingness to take risks in pursuit of his passions. He was also a patron of the arts and a respected member of British society. Lord Carnarvon was born in 1866 and inherited his title and wealth at a young age. He developed an early interest in Egyptology and began collecting artifacts from the region. In 1907, he met Howard Carter, an archaeologist who would later become his partner in the search for Tutankhamun's tomb. Together, they conducted several excavations in the Valley of the Kings, but it wasn't until 1922 that they made their historic discovery. Lord Carnarvon's financial backing was crucial to the success of the expedition, but his role in the discovery was more than just financial. He was present at the site when the tomb was opened and was the first person to see the treasures inside. However, his involvement in the expedition was cut short when he died suddenly from an infected mosquito bite. His death, along with the supposed curse of the pharaohs, added to the mystique and fascination surrounding the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. In addition to his contributions to Egyptology, Lord Carnarvon was also a prominent figure in British society. He was a member of the House of Lords and served in the military during World War I. He was also a patron of the arts and supported several artists and writers of his time.
