Living Inside-out Public Park Furniture

Living Inside-out Public park furniture is an innovative urban design solution that reimagines traditional public seating by creating intimate, home-like environments within public spaces. Designed by Brian Lee and Denise Chan, this groundbreaking furniture system transforms conventional park experiences by incorporating elements typically associated with indoor living rooms into outdoor settings. The design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, features three distinct furniture groupings spread across 70 square meters, incorporating sustainable materials including Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and recycled components that comprise 70% of its construction. The furniture's ergonomic design considers various user needs, with lower sitting heights ranging from 345-385mm and wheelchair-accessible configurations. The first grouping accommodates up to 10 users with a long sofa, single seaters, and a large coffee table; the second group features a lounge area with solar-powered LED lamps ideal for individual relaxation; while the third group, set on a synthetic recycled wood deck, provides seating for 4-6 people. This revolutionary approach to public furniture challenges traditional park bench orientations by enabling multiple seating configurations and social interactions. The design incorporates weather-resistant materials, solar-powered lighting, and easy-maintenance features, making it particularly suitable for urban environments. Originally implemented at Cornwall Street Park in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, this design represents a significant advancement in public space furniture, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enhance community interaction and transform underutilized public spaces into vibrant social hubs.
