Lithuanian Fruits Packaging

Lithuanian Fruits Packaging is an innovative packaging design project that celebrates Lithuania's rich pomological heritage through a sophisticated system of fruit packaging, developed by designer Edmundas Jankauskas. This comprehensive packaging solution, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, represents a thoughtful integration of historical research, sustainable materials, and sensory design elements. The design encompasses specially crafted boxes for various Lithuanian fruit breeds, utilizing a 75mm square format for most varieties, with larger 115mm height variations for pears, constructed from corrugated cardboard and incorporating natural hay as an internal stabilizer. The design's distinctive approach assigns specific colors to represent each fruit variety's unique properties, including taste characteristics, structural elements, mineral content, and nutritional values, creating a visual language that communicates the distinct attributes of each breed. The packaging system demonstrates exceptional attention to tactile experience through the use of textured paper for labels that mimics the surface quality of apples and pears, while the inclusion of hay serves both functional and sensory purposes, providing product protection while enriching the natural aromatic experience. This design solution effectively addresses the challenge of promoting Lithuania's historical fruit breeds, which date back to the 16th century, through a contemporary packaging system that combines practical functionality with cultural storytelling. The project, completed over four months, represents a significant contribution to sustainable packaging design, incorporating eco-friendly materials while successfully balancing protection, presentation, and market appeal.
