Lightning Arresters

Lightning arresters, also known as surge arresters or lightning suppressors, are devices designed to protect electrical power systems and equipment from the damaging effects of lightning strikes and other electrical surges. Lightning arresters work by providing a low-impedance path for high-voltage surges to ground, thus diverting the surge away from sensitive equipment and preventing damage. Lightning arresters typically consist of a spark gap or other voltage-sensitive component connected between the power line and ground. When a high-voltage surge is detected, the spark gap ionizes and conducts the surge to ground, effectively shunting the surge away from the equipment being protected. Modern lightning arresters may also use metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or other solid-state devices to provide surge protection. Lightning arresters are commonly used in high-voltage power transmission and distribution systems, as well as in industrial and commercial facilities where sensitive electronic equipment is at risk of damage from electrical surges. They are also used in residential settings to protect household appliances and electronics from lightning strikes and other surges. While lightning arresters are highly effective at protecting equipment from electrical surges, they are not foolproof. In some cases, lightning strikes or other surges may still cause damage, particularly if the surge is of sufficient magnitude or duration. Additionally, lightning arresters must be properly installed and maintained in order to provide effective protection.
