Light Diodes

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), also known as Light Diodes, are semiconductor devices that emit light when an electric current is passed through them. LEDs are widely used in various applications such as lighting, displays, and indicators due to their high efficiency, long lifespan, and low power consumption. The first LED was invented in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr., a researcher at General Electric. Since then, LEDs have undergone significant improvements in terms of brightness, color, and cost-effectiveness. LEDs are now available in a range of colors, including red, green, blue, yellow, and white, with varying levels of brightness and efficiency. LEDs are made of semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide, gallium phosphide, and indium gallium nitride. When an electric current is applied to the semiconductor material, electrons are excited, and they release energy in the form of photons, which produces light. The color of the light emitted by an LED depends on the type of semiconductor material used. LEDs have several advantages over traditional incandescent and fluorescent lights. They are highly energy-efficient, consuming up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs and up to 60% less energy than fluorescent tubes. LEDs also have a much longer lifespan, lasting up to 50,000 hours or more, compared to the 1,000-hour lifespan of incandescent bulbs. In addition to lighting, LEDs are also used in displays, such as those found in televisions, computer monitors, and smartphones. They are also used in automotive lighting, traffic signals, and in the backlighting of LCD screens.
