Lian Multifunctional Chair is an innovative classroom furniture design that exemplifies the evolution of educational seating solutions in contemporary Chinese academic environments. Created by designers Mengfei Lian, Chunmao Wu, and Xiaozhen Ying, this versatile seating solution draws inspiration from the poetic imagery of ripples in ancient Chinese literature, translating this fluid concept into a functional form that measures 700 x 680 x 773 millimeters. The chair's distinguishing feature is its adaptable work surface, which can be rotated to accommodate various user positions and activities, including reading, writing, relaxation, and face-to-face communication. Constructed using a combination of PVC boards, textiles, steel pipes, and metal components, the design prioritizes both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. The chair incorporates thoughtful storage solutions within its base and features a seat diameter of 450 millimeters at a comfortable height of 450 millimeters. This Iron A' Design Award-winning furniture piece addresses the evolving needs of university students by facilitating both individual study and collaborative learning environments. The design's modular nature allows multiple chairs to be combined freely, promoting interactive learning spaces while maintaining individual comfort and autonomy. Developed between June 2020 and January 2021 in Shanghai, the chair represents a significant advancement in classroom furniture design, balancing personal comfort, interactive capabilities, and mass production feasibility. The design emerged from comprehensive research into contemporary Chinese educational environments and student needs, offering a solution that enhances the learning experience through its multifunctional capabilities and user-centered approach.
