Leonard Smithers
Leonard Smithers (1861-1907) was a British publisher, bibliophile, and literary figure who played a significant role in the Decadent movement of the late 19th century. He was a close friend and associate of Oscar Wilde, and was instrumental in the publication of several of Wilde's works, including The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Salome. Smithers was also a collector of rare books and manuscripts, and his extensive collection included works by Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, and other prominent figures of the Decadent movement. In addition to his publishing and collecting activities, Smithers was also a writer and artist in his own right. He contributed articles and reviews to various literary magazines, and his own poetry and prose appeared in several anthologies. As an artist, he produced a number of illustrations and bookplates, many of which were influenced by the Art Nouveau style. Despite his contributions to the Decadent movement, Smithers' reputation suffered in the wake of Wilde's scandal and imprisonment. He was often accused of exploiting Wilde's notoriety for his own financial gain, and his involvement in the publication of The Chameleon (a scandalous magazine that featured erotic literature and illustrations) further tarnished his reputation. Despite these controversies, Smithers remains an important figure in the history of the Decadent movement, and his contributions to the publication and promotion of Decadent literature and art cannot be denied.
