La Galerie Residence
La Galerie Residence is an award-winning residential interior design project that transforms a 33-year-old apartment in Taiwan into an artistic living environment conceptualized as a pristine white gallery space, where the fundamental design philosophy centers on integrating the cyclical essence of the four seasons into the daily experience of domestic life through a sophisticated interplay of color, texture, and spatial flow. Completed in May 2023 by designers Liao Cheng and Liao Jung of C. J. House Design, La Galerie Residence encompasses 132 square meters of living space that includes three bedrooms, a study room, a living room, a dining room, two bathrooms, and a kitchen, all of which underwent an almost complete renovation that involved the removal of existing partitions and a comprehensive reconfiguration of the spatial layout to better align with the inhabitants' lifestyle preferences and feng shui principles while maintaining the structural integrity of the aging building. The design approach employed in La Galerie Residence draws inspiration from the owner's youthful spirit and deep appreciation for freedom and artistic expression, manifesting in an unconventional aesthetic that utilizes flowing curves to define thematic zones throughout the residence, with each area carefully orchestrated to evoke specific seasonal characteristics through strategic placement of paintings and deliberate color palettes that range from vibrant greens, blues, and oranges in public spaces to more subdued dark tones in private quarters. The material palette of La Galerie Residence demonstrates a commitment to sustainable design practices through the incorporation of wood and recycled metal, notably repurposing the original aluminum windows for structural reinforcement while introducing accents of metal strips, stone, and fabric to enhance the gallery-like atmosphere that permeates the space. The spatial composition features rich layers of white tones serving as a neutral backdrop against which seasonal artwork becomes the focal point, with paintings representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter strategically positioned in the entryway, living room, corridor, and dining area to amplify the ambient character of each zone, while darker, more introspective tones in private areas reflect the personal preferences of the residents. The design overcame significant challenges inherent to renovating an older structure, particularly the need to demolish interior walls and reconfigure the layout without compromising structural integrity, while simultaneously addressing the unique requirement of creating flexible dual master bedrooms to accommodate the different work schedules of the two owners, allowing for independent use at varying times. La Galerie Residence distinguishes itself through its innovative spatial narrative that evokes the sensation of inhabiting a living painting, with layered green waves reminiscent of spring moss, a summer wave painting positioned to capture natural light and evoke the warmth of sunlight and sea breezes, and the strategic use of the long, narrow layout to facilitate natural light penetration from both ends, illuminating the dining area and kitchen while autumn-themed paintings with deeper brushstrokes and curved walls create stability and guide movement through the space, culminating in a winter-themed painting in the dining area that captures shifting light patterns to complete the four-season thematic cycle. The technical execution of La Galerie Residence involved meticulous attention to the interplay between natural and artificial lighting, with focused illumination highlighting seasonal paintings to introduce depth and visual interest, while concealed storage solutions maintain the minimalist aesthetic and bright, open spaces enhance the sense of freedom and artistic expression that defines the project. The design successfully addresses the practical needs of contemporary residential living while elevating the everyday experience through artistic intervention, creating a seamless connection between interior and exterior environments that makes the passage of time itself an integral component of the living experience. La Galerie Residence received recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, an accolade that acknowledges designs meeting professional and industrial standards through practical innovations and thoughtful solutions that demonstrate solid understanding of design principles, creative execution, and contributions that improve quality of life. The project exemplifies how residential interior design can transcend mere functional requirements to create environments that resonate with the inhabitants' personal values and aesthetic sensibilities, transforming a conventional apartment into a space that reflects both the artistic temperament of its occupants and the designers' ability to synthesize feng shui principles, sustainable material choices, and contemporary design language into a cohesive and evocative domestic environment. The residents' appreciation for the transformed space, particularly the improved natural lighting and air circulation, validates the design approach that prioritizes both aesthetic refinement and practical comfort, demonstrating how thoughtful spatial planning and artistic vision can collaborate to produce living environments that function as both shelter and inspiration. La Galerie Residence represents a significant contribution to contemporary interior design discourse by illustrating how older residential structures can be revitalized through creative intervention that respects architectural constraints while introducing fresh interpretations of domestic space, proving that residential design can serve as a medium for artistic expression without sacrificing the functional requirements essential to comfortable daily living.
