Koto Tea Space Cafe is an innovative Japanese teahouse situated in downtown Bangkok that exemplifies the traditional concept of Shichu no Sankyo (a rural retreat within an urban setting), earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design. The establishment's distinctive entrance features wave-patterned ceramic tiles, meticulously fabricated using 3D-printed molds, which serve both aesthetic and functional purposes by shielding the interior from urban chaos while managing sunlight and rainfall. The main tea salon accommodates six seats and two tatami areas, incorporating a horizontal design composition inspired by the architectural elements of Shugaku-in palace. The space's thoughtful design seamlessly integrates existing structural elements with earthy wall finishes and natural lacquer-finished furniture crafted from solid ash and ash veneer plywood, creating an atmosphere of refined tranquility. The interior's careful attention to proportion and composition reflects classical Japanese architectural principles, while incorporating pan-Asian motifs in its tile patterns as a testament to cultural exchange. The 4600mm x 14550mm x 3320mm space features sophisticated lighting solutions and demonstrates innovative use of digital fabrication techniques in its ceramic facade, which required multiple prototypes to achieve optimal performance. The design successfully creates distinct layers of experience, guiding visitors through a journey from the bustling exterior to serene interior spaces, including dedicated areas for authentic tea ceremonies and workshops that promote Japanese tea culture.
