Kokomi Japanese Restaurant
Kokomi Japanese Restaurant is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies contemporary Japanese dining aesthetics while honoring traditional architectural elements. Located in Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong, this culinary establishment represents a sophisticated fusion of functionality and cultural design elements, conceived by architect Benson Lee. The restaurant's spatial organization revolves around two primary focal points: a meticulously designed Sushi/Bar counter that integrates sushi preparation with beverage service, and a prominent Teppanyaki station. The interior architecture draws inspiration from traditional Japanese folk houses, featuring predominant reddish-brown timber panels and reimagined carpentry details that pay homage to classical Japanese craftsmanship. The design's material palette is particularly noteworthy, incorporating bush-hammered stone blocks for the counter tops and book-matched marble in rigato finishes for the overhead structures. The backdrop wall presents a compelling composition of sandblasted grey granite tiles, rough-chiseled natural stone slats, and raw iron strips, enhanced by strategic criss-crossed lighting effects. This thoughtful integration of materials and lighting creates an atmosphere that balances contemporary casual dining with traditional Japanese architectural elements. The project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates excellence in spatial planning, material selection, and cultural sensitivity. The design successfully creates distinct zones for different dining experiences while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space, exemplifying how modern restaurant design can effectively blend functionality with cultural authenticity.
