Kitabatake2 Residential House

Kitabatake2 Residential House is an innovative residential architecture project located in Osaka, Japan, distinguished by its thoughtful response to urban spatial constraints and commitment to creating a harmonious living environment. Completed in November 2018, this wooden structure masterfully addresses the challenges of an elongated site through its sophisticated design incorporating a central courtyard and strategic top lighting system. The residence, spanning 139.71 square meters with a building area of 77.80 square meters, features dimensions of 6,370mm width, 141,050mm depth, and 8,291mm height, exemplifying efficient space utilization in urban Japanese architecture. Designed by architect Shunichiro Ninomiya and team, the house demonstrates exceptional spatial organization with public spaces on the first floor and private quarters on the second floor, connected by a courtyard that serves as both a functional and aesthetic centerpiece. The building's exterior is characterized by cement board walls treated with antifouling paint, while the interior spaces are enhanced by natural illumination through strategically placed slit-shaped top lights that create dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully addresses the complex requirements of contemporary urban living while maintaining privacy in a densely built environment. The integration of natural elements through the courtyard's planted trees creates a moisture-rich atmosphere that contributes to the overall environmental comfort, while the careful separation of public and private spaces ensures optimal functionality for a family of five.
