Kinpachimikan Orange Gift Box

Kinpachimikan Orange gift box is an innovative packaging design solution created by Japanese designers Koichi Sugiyama and Minako Endo that exemplifies the intersection of cultural tradition and contemporary design aesthetics. This sophisticated gift packaging, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, was specifically conceived to present premium-grade citrus fruits that represent the top one percent of harvested oranges in terms of quality and sweetness. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from the Japanese custom of year-end gift-giving, incorporating both functional and symbolic elements in its execution. The package features a thoughtfully considered dual-box structure: an outer carton adorned with a minimalist orange icon and a numerical fraction (1/100) that communicates the product's exclusivity, complemented by an artistic representation of mountain-slope orange groves, while the inner box employs gold foil hot stamping and matte varnish finishing to symbolize the singular precious nature of its contents. The packaging's dimensions (320mm x 320mm x 73mm for the inner box, 330mm x 330mm x 95mm for the outer carton) are meticulously calculated to ensure optimal protection and presentation of the delicate fruit. The design incorporates sustainable thinking through its drawer-type construction, encouraging post-use retention and repurposing, thereby extending its lifecycle beyond its primary function. This packaging solution, developed in 2009 in Arida, Wakayama prefecture, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its material selection and finishing techniques, particularly in its use of matte varnish to convey freshness and premium quality, achieved through extensive prototyping and refinement.
