Kime Old Vase Design Object
Kime Old Vase Design Object is a profound artistic exploration of time, mortality, and craftsmanship, created by Japanese designer Kairo Kusamoto. This conceptual design piece, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, represents a sophisticated interpretation of the Japanese concept of 'Kime,' which traditionally refers to organic, heterogeneous surface textures found in nature, such as tree bark or human skin. The work involves the deliberate deconstruction and subsequent reconstruction of an antique Chinese vase using Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Standing at 720mm in height and 217mm in width, this piece embodies a complex philosophical statement about human mortality and the value of time-consuming handcraft in contemporary society. The creation process, spanning from October 2017 to January 2018 in Tokyo, involved meticulous handwork using materials including gold powder, brass powder, lacquer, and resin. The design's conceptual framework draws from diverse theoretical sources, including Barthes' semiotics, Heidegger's temporal philosophy, and Bataille's universal economics, resulting in a multilayered work that transcends mere decorative function. The intentional destruction and restoration process serves as a metaphor for the conscious consumption of time leading to death, challenging utilitarian perspectives on value and craftsmanship. This piece distinguishes itself from mass-produced items through its emphasis on time-intensive handcraft and its ability to serve both as a functional vase and as a contemplative art object that prompts viewers to consider the relationship between human mortality, craftsmanship, and time.
