KIBA Tokyo Residence Building
KIBA Tokyo Residence Building is a significant architectural achievement in Tokyo, Japan, exemplifying innovative urban residential design within constrained spatial parameters. Completed in 2019, this seven-story reinforced concrete structure harmoniously integrates multiple dwelling types while paying homage to its historical context in the KIBA district, formerly renowned for its lumber trade. The building, occupying a modest 72.97 square meter site, encompasses a total floor area of 385.52 square meters and ingeniously incorporates three distinct housing typologies - accommodating single residents, couples, and families with children - through the strategic implementation of maisonnette-style configurations. The building's most distinctive feature is its wooden louver façade, which extends approximately three meters in length and rises to twenty-three meters, supported through an innovative fixing system that considers wind pressure and load-bearing requirements. This architectural element serves as a poetic reference to the area's historical identity as a lumber trading district while simultaneously creating a contemporary architectural statement. The structure, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional spatial efficiency and community-oriented design principles. The project, led by architect Eisuke Yamazaki with collaborators Toshio Yoshikawa and Hiroshi Sakaguchi, successfully addresses contemporary urban challenges while preserving cultural memory through its thoughtful design approach, establishing new paradigms for small-scale urban residential architecture.
