Kendall International Preschool is an innovative educational facility design that reimagines the traditional concept of podium kindergartens in Hong Kong's vertical urban landscape. This groundbreaking architectural project transforms a conventional ground-floor podium space into a village-like learning environment, embodying the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy which views children as active constructors of knowledge within a community setting. The design masterfully addresses multiple scale relationships: the contrast between city and village scales, the interplay between room and podium dimensions, and the ergonomic considerations between teacher and child proportions. The spatial arrangement features a central plaza surrounded by half-height village house-styled classrooms, creating a community-within-community concept behind transparent glass partitions. The design maximizes the high headroom of the podium by incorporating multi-level exploration elements including tree houses, slides, climbing rocks, and nets, encouraging physical activity and discovery-based learning. Natural materials and a neutral color palette of white and wood tones create a backdrop that emphasizes the children's presence and activities. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in transforming structural challenges into educational opportunities, such as converting columns into functional design elements - one becoming a village house chimney and another supporting a birdhouse feature. This thoughtful architectural solution creates an environment that fosters both individual exploration and community interaction, setting a new standard for early childhood education spaces in high-density urban environments.
