Karst Water Filtration Staircase
Karst Water Filtration Staircase is an innovative architectural and environmental design solution that combines functionality with ecological consciousness, created by designers Chi-Hao Chiang and Zhixian Song. This modular concrete staircase system, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components Design category, represents a groundbreaking approach to integrating water filtration systems within architectural elements. The design draws inspiration from karst terrain formations and solutional caves, incorporating both their aesthetic and functional properties into its structure. The staircase, measuring 2032 mm x 5740.4 mm x 5130.8 mm, features a sophisticated system of pockets containing crushed oyster shells, which serve as natural filtering agents. These calcium carbonate-rich shells interact with acid rain, effectively neutralizing it while absorbing carbon dioxide, thus addressing ocean acidification concerns. The water flow system creates an immersive sensory experience, allowing users to both see and hear the water as it moves through the structure, effectively blurring the traditional boundaries between built environment and natural systems. The design's modular nature enables versatile implementation, whether as an indoor installation or as separated units distributed across various locations, making it particularly suitable for its intended location on Governors Island in New York. The filtration process begins with rainwater trickling through the oyster shell-filled pockets, continuing along the cliff-like surfaces and through carefully designed troughs, ultimately returning filtered water to the harbor in a sustainable cycle that benefits the entire ecosystem.
