Kaffihus Hringur Coffee Shop is an innovative architectural project situated at the Hverfjall Crater in Iceland, designed by Yuting Zhang as a sustainable rest stop that harmoniously integrates with its volcanic surroundings. The circular structure, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2023, draws inspiration from the adjacent tuff cone volcano, featuring an inward-facing pitched roof that pays homage to the natural formation. The building is strategically divided into four distinct quadrants, each serving a specific function: a coffee service area, restroom facilities, an exhibition space highlighting local geology, and a covered observation terrace offering panoramic views of Lake Myvatn. The architecture employs a modular wood frame construction with a charred, dark gray cedar exterior that echoes the site's black basalt grounds, while the interior showcases warm exposed cedar contrasted with rough stone furnishings and copper-toned metal accents. Environmental sustainability is central to the design, incorporating advanced features such as underground geothermal heat pumps, low-E triple-pane glass, rainwater harvesting systems, and dry composting toilets. The establishment operates with minimal staffing requirements and functions entirely off-grid, offering visitors a comprehensive sensory experience through its carefully curated selection of coffee beans grown in volcanic soil. The structure's open courtyard features an Icelandic garden, creating a transitional space that connects visitors to the surrounding landscape while providing a contemplative atmosphere for hikers to rest and rejuvenate.
