Kabu Console

Kabu Console is an award-winning furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of natural inspiration and masterful craftsmanship. Created by Spanish designers Adriana Pardo and Yago Mendez in 2014, this sophisticated console table draws its distinctive aesthetic from the curved tree trunks found in Polish forests, translating organic forms into refined furniture. The piece is characterized by its gracefully curved shelf, which is achieved through an intricate lamination process where wood strips of 3-4 millimeters thickness are individually curved and bonded. Crafted entirely from solid wood options including chestnut, oak, cherry, or walnut, the console demonstrates exceptional cabinet-making techniques, employing splined joints for the boards and mortise-and-tenon joints for the legs. Measuring 1100mm in width, 400mm in depth, and 800mm in height, the design achieves a delicate balance between substantial presence and visual lightness. The meticulous attention to detail extends to the careful consideration of wood grain patterns and edge treatments, enhancing the natural beauty of the material. Drawing influence from both Nordic and Japanese design principles, the Kabu Console embodies a timeless aesthetic that transcends specific style categories, making it a versatile piece for various interior settings. The design's excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018, acknowledging its innovative approach to material manipulation and outstanding craftsmanship. The development process, spanning seven months, involved extensive research into wood properties, structural forces, and joinery techniques to ensure both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability, reflecting the designers' commitment to creating furniture that can be passed down through generations.
