K Villa
K Villa is an architecturally distinctive residential structure located in Nasu, Tochigi, Japan, completed in 2020, that exemplifies minimalist design principles through its innovative use of structural elements and spatial composition. The villa's design philosophy centers on creating a profound connection between human consciousness and nature, challenging traditional architectural conventions that typically separate indoor and outdoor spaces. The structure is characterized by its unique composition of two-dimensional surfaces - floors, walls, and roofs - that are deliberately kept as separate components rather than being conventionally joined, creating a floating effect that diminishes the perception of mass and thickness. A notable technical achievement is the use of 90-millimeter diameter columns supporting the roof, pushing the boundaries of structural engineering in an earthquake-prone region. The villa's spatial arrangement is marked by its open-plan design, featuring a 3-meter-long dining table integrated with the kitchen that emphasizes longitudinal direction and spatial continuity. Covering a building area of 105.16 square meters within a site area of 517.12 square meters, the villa employs reinforced concrete construction with innovative details such as stainless steel mirrors fitted to certain slabs, designed to visually expand and reflect the surrounding natural environment. This architectural work, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a significant achievement in contemporary residential architecture, particularly in its approach to dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior spaces while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic refinement.
