Julius Koller
Julius Koller (1939-2007), a Slovak artist, was known for his exploration of the relationship between art and everyday life as well as perception and reality. He was part of the New Tendencies art movement of the 1960s, which examined the role of technology in modern art. His best known works include the Univerzálne Koncepty series, which used language and symbols to create an abstract visual experience, and Neo-Conceptual Objects, which explored the boundaries between art and everyday objects. Koller revolutionized the understanding of art by creating an entirely new framework in which to view it, with notions of circularity, open structure and chance. His works were displayed in exhibitions around the world, including the Tokyo Biennale and the Venice Biennale. Koller was awarded the Golden Lion at the XLVII Venice Biennale in 1997.
