Invisible Parking Fortification Vechten Parking Lot And Entrance National Museum

Invisible parking fortification Vechten Parking lot and entrance national museum is an innovative landscape architectural project that seamlessly integrates parking infrastructure with historical military heritage, creating a unique solution for accommodating modern vehicular needs while preserving the cultural and environmental integrity of a significant historical site. This remarkable design, created by landscape architects Marcel Eekhout and Paul de Kort, transforms a 3-hectare area into a dual-purpose space that functions as both a meadow and a parking facility for 250 cars, 100 bicycles, touring coaches, and shuttle buses. The design's distinguishing feature lies in its ability to remain virtually invisible when not in use, maintaining the aesthetic and historical character of the Dutch Waterline fortification. The project employs sustainable Cradle to Cradle principles throughout its construction, utilizing innovative materials such as cement-free concrete and recycled concrete grass tiles. The design incorporates distinctive elements including concrete anti-tank structures and elevated stork nests that serve as subtle lighting fixtures, creating sight lines that emphasize the fortress and concrete bunkers when vehicles are present. The project, which was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, demonstrates exceptional consideration for environmental impact, incorporating amber-colored LED lighting specifically designed to protect the local bat population. The parking facility's removable design ensures minimal disruption to underground water flows and archaeological monuments, while its military-inspired geometric arrangement becomes apparent only when vehicles are present, creating a dynamic visual narrative that connects the site's historical purpose with its contemporary function.
