In:possible Chair
In:possible Chair is an innovative furniture design that challenges conventional perceptions of stability and form through its distinctive slanted aesthetic. Created by designer Kun Ming Thian, this avant-garde seating solution represents a bold exploration of physics and visual illusion in furniture design. The chair employs the artistic principle of Trompe-l'œil to create an apparent 'stable slant,' utilizing a highly visible glass base that seems to defy gravitational forces. Despite its dramatically distorted appearance, the chair maintains ergonomic functionality with comfortable elevation for practical use. Measuring 475mm in width, 29mm in depth, and 1200mm in height, the design underwent rigorous testing to achieve optimal thickness, strength, and proportional balance. The development process, spanning from June to December 2014, involved extensive experimentation with high-density foam models to perfect the stability mechanics and weight distribution. The seamless framework and its interaction with the supporting glass demonstrate exceptional attention to detail in both joining methods and finishing techniques. This artistic furniture piece serves to heighten awareness of objects by materializing seemingly impossible concepts, challenging primitive understanding of how things typically function. The design's unique approach earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, acknowledging its contribution to pushing the boundaries of conventional furniture design while maintaining functional integrity. The chair represents a harmonious blend of artistic expression and functional design, successfully breaking preconceived notions of stability while redefining chair topology through its innovative use of materials and visual dynamics.
