This distinctive cartographic work, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, revolutionizes conventional map-making by incorporating a 360-degree panoramic view of the city landscape surrounding a centrally positioned wind rose. Drawing inspiration from historical Portulan charts used during the Portuguese Age of Discovery and Dutch Golden Age painting traditions, the map challenges traditional cartographic conventions by allowing multi-directional reading, breaking free from the standard northern orientation. The design, executed through a meticulous process of 24 detailed contour drawings using ballpoint pen and later refined through digital illustration software, measures 680mm x 680mm when unfolded and creates a direct spatial relationship between the observer and the surrounding urban landscape. The map's innovative approach resolves the inherent tension between free-form observational drawing and precise cartographic representation through a metaphorical dialogue between these two visual languages. Created from a privileged vantage point atop the City Hall's seventh floor, this work offers citizens an unprecedented perspective of their urban environment, while simultaneously serving as a practical wayfinding tool and an artistic documentation of the city's architectural character. The design's unique property lies in its user-centric approach, where viewers can trace lines from the central point to correlate buildings in the panoramic border with their positions on the map, creating an interactive and intuitive navigation experience that enhances the sense of place and spatial understanding.
