Illuminators

Illuminators were skilled artists who created intricate and ornate illustrations in illuminated manuscripts during the medieval period. These manuscripts were often religious texts, such as bibles or prayer books, and the illuminators were responsible for adding color, gold leaf, and decorative designs to the pages. The art of illumination was highly valued and sought after, and the illuminators themselves were often held in high esteem. The process of illumination was a time-consuming and labor-intensive one. The illuminator would first sketch out the design in pencil, and then apply a layer of gesso to the page to create a smooth surface for painting. Next, they would mix pigments with water or egg yolk to create the desired colors, and apply them to the page using a brush. Gold leaf was often added to highlight certain elements of the design, and the illuminator would use a fine brush to apply it to the page. Illuminators were highly skilled artists who had a deep understanding of color theory and composition. They were often trained in monasteries or guilds, and their work was highly sought after by wealthy patrons. Illuminated manuscripts were considered luxury items, and owning one was a sign of wealth and prestige. Despite the decline of illuminated manuscripts with the invention of the printing press, the art of illumination has continued to be practiced by artists throughout the centuries. Today, illuminators may create works of art on a variety of surfaces, including paper, canvas, or even digital media.
