Ike House is an innovative residential architectural project completed in 2019 in Nagoya, Japan, that exemplifies thoughtful urban living through its sophisticated design approach to privacy and environmental integration. The three-story reinforced concrete structure, spanning 602 square meters on a 365-square-meter site, demonstrates exceptional spatial efficiency in dense urban conditions while maintaining a harmonious relationship with its surroundings. The design's distinguishing feature is its sophisticated skin system, which employs various functional layers wrapped around a basic cubic form, including perforated blocks for ventilation, strategically positioned vertical and horizontal grids, and reflective curtain wall glass. The exterior showcases a unique wood-grained concrete finish, achieved through an innovative technique of casting concrete against cedar board formwork, creating a sculptural facade that contributes positively to the urban landscape. The building's form cleverly offsets at upper levels to preserve neighboring properties' access to sunlight, while three pocket gardens strategically positioned throughout the structure facilitate natural light penetration and ventilation. This thoughtful approach to urban residential architecture earned the project a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, recognizing its innovative solution to contemporary urban living challenges. The design successfully balances privacy requirements with environmental connectivity, featuring materials that include wood-grained concrete, wood garage doors, curtain wall glass, and stone fence blocks, all selected for their timeless appeal and material authenticity.
