Hutong Neighborhood Complex Coffee Shop is an innovative architectural renovation project that exemplifies the concept of urban micro-renewal in Beijing's historic hutong district, transforming a traditional structure into a multifunctional community space that harmoniously blends contemporary design with cultural preservation. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project encompasses 133 square meters across two floors, ingeniously incorporating a coffee shop, shared office space, art gallery, and community living room within its carefully considered layout. The design philosophy centers on creating a vital public space that serves both local residents and visitors while preserving the architectural heritage of the area. The structure's renovation employs environmentally conscious materials that complement the hutong district's characteristic aesthetics, featuring distinctive elements such as sulfuric acid paper glass partitions inspired by Qianlong period Beijing maps and ultra-fine linear light installations that create a compelling dialogue between historical and contemporary design elements. The first floor functions as a communal living room, extending the concept of domestic space into the public realm, while the second floor serves as a flexible garden space with movable plant boxes that allow for adaptive spatial configuration. The project's technical achievements include the preservation of the original blue brick exterior walls and wooden roof structure, while introducing modern amenities and sustainable design solutions. The space operates on a dynamic schedule, accommodating weekend visitors for leisure activities and transforming into a shared workspace during weekdays, while consistently providing rest areas for elderly community members and hosting international art exhibitions.
