Hurricane Desktop Lighting Installation
Hurricane Desktop Lighting Installation is an innovative lighting design that masterfully explores the interplay between dynamic and static elements through a sophisticated combination of parametric design and advanced manufacturing techniques. Created by Professor Naai-Jung Shih, this desktop illumination piece represents a profound meditation on contrasting dualities: opacity versus transparency, solid versus void, and defined boundaries versus infinite reflectivity. The installation consists of multiple three-dimensional hurricane-shaped forms, meticulously crafted through parametric adjustment of curvature and wave frequency, produced in white ABS material using Fused Deposition Method (FDM) rapid-prototyping technology. These sculptural elements are arranged within a double-layered acrylic enclosure measuring 30cm x 30cm x 30cm, with LED lighting strategically positioned between layers. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from extreme weather phenomena, particularly summer hurricanes, transforming these dynamic natural forces into frozen moments of aesthetic contemplation. The installation serves dual purposes, functioning as an illuminated art piece in darkened environments and as a striking sculptural object in daylight. The arrangement of the hurricane forms facilitates optimal light distribution from bottom to top, while the double-layered boundary creates an infinite reflection effect that extends the virtual boundaries of the design. This work, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, exemplifies the successful integration of computational design, advanced manufacturing, and artistic vision in contemporary lighting design.
