House Nordlicht Monolithic Bungalow
House Nordlicht Monolithic Bungalow is an innovative architectural masterpiece situated in the Bavarian-Bohemian Forest Natural Park, exemplifying the seamless integration of minimalist design principles with sustainable construction practices. This single-storey residential structure, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a groundbreaking approach to contemporary sustainable architecture through its monolithic construction methodology. The bungalow features 60-centimeter thick walls cast in lightweight thermal concrete with cellular glass aggregates, achieving remarkable energy efficiency with a primary energy consumption of only 32 kWh per square meter. The design philosophy embraces the concept of a joint-less and reveal-free structure, manifesting as a sculptural intervention in the landscape that harmoniously follows the natural topography. The building's spatial organization demonstrates sophisticated environmental consciousness, with an open-plan living area oriented towards the south, while bedroom, studio, and study spaces unfold towards the east and north beneath an expansive cantilevered roof. The structure's innovative use of locally sourced pine trees for formwork, which leaves their imprint eternally preserved in the concrete surfaces, creates a poetic connection to its surroundings. The building envelope encompasses 920.22 square meters, with a gross floor area of 286.42 square meters, incorporating 104.52 square meters of strategically placed windows that frame spectacular views of the rolling hills and forest. The project's technical achievements include overcoming significant construction challenges related to concrete mixing and temperature control during the casting process, utilizing innovative cooling solutions such as iced water and internal cooling pipes to manage the exothermic reaction in the thick walls.
