House For Trees House
House For Trees House is an innovative architectural project located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, that represents a groundbreaking approach to sustainable urban residential design. This remarkable structure, completed in 2014, consists of five distinct bamboo-textured concrete boxes strategically designed as elevated planters, each supporting full-sized trees on their rooftops. The project, which spans a gross floor area of 226.50 square meters on a 474.32 square meter site, addresses critical urban challenges including the severe lack of green spaces in rapidly developing cities, where vegetation coverage can be as low as 0.25%. The design ingeniously integrates nature into the urban fabric through its unique structural composition, effectively creating a prototype for sustainable tropical architecture. The concrete boxes, while serving as living spaces, double as large-scale planters that support substantial soil volumes necessary for mature trees, creating a harmonious blend between architecture and nature. This innovative approach to urban housing, which won the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, employs passive environmental strategies and local materials throughout its construction. The project's significance extends beyond its immediate footprint, as it demonstrates a replicable solution for sustainable urban development in tropical regions. With a modest budget of 155,000 USD, the design successfully incorporates sophisticated environmental considerations while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The house's design philosophy directly responds to contemporary urban challenges such as air pollution, frequent flooding, and the disconnection between city dwellers and nature, offering a practical and poetic solution that reimagines the relationship between built environment and natural elements in dense urban contexts.
