House For Parents Residence

House For Parents Residence

House for Parents Residence is an architecturally significant residential project located on Amami-Oshima Island, Japan, exemplifying a harmonious blend of contemporary design solutions with traditional cultural elements. The structure, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates innovative architectural responses to challenging subtropical climatic conditions. Its most distinctive feature is a rectangular roof supported by a sophisticated 4-meter-span steel framework structure, creating an environment reminiscent of the comfortable habitat found under natural tree canopies - a design choice that pays homage to the island's traditional custom of community gathering under large trees. The residence's structural innovation lies in its independent concrete walls, which stand separate from the roof structure, enabling a flexible floor plan unrestricted by steel column placement. This architectural approach creates an expansive living space that seamlessly connects with the island's rich landscape through continuously projecting concrete walls. The design successfully addresses the region's severe weather conditions, particularly frequent typhoons, while maintaining aesthetic elegance and cultural sensitivity. The project represents a significant achievement in residential architecture, demonstrating how modern structural solutions can be employed to celebrate and preserve traditional cultural practices while ensuring practical functionality in challenging environmental conditions.
